The newest and most effective natural methylation enhancing compound is TMG. Commonly known as betaine**, glycine betaine, or oxyneurine, TMG is found in most microorganisms and almost all marine and fresh water invertebrates. The best known natural sources of TMG are plants from the chenopodiaceae family, namely, the sugar beet. TMG is often referred to as a quasi-vitamin because although humans and other animals can synthesize it from choline, it can't be synthesized in adequate quantities and generally needs to be included in the diet. TMG is a natural methyl donor, and is one of the phytochemicals recently extruded from plants.
Metabolically, TMG is broken down into dimethylglycine (DMG) during the synthesis of the amino acid methionine from homocysteine, the main pathway for the degradation of TMG. A diet high in broccoli, spinach or beets can provide as much as a fifth or even a quarter teaspoon of TMG, just over 500 mg. In the process of extracting pure TMG from sugar beets (a process which does not use any solvents or alcohol called chromatographic separation--the best method), separates betaine based on its physical and chemical properties. There is a residue from extraction from other parts of beets. This residual is less than 1% of the resulting TMG, leaving a 99% pure product in its best and most effective form. In its natural form, TMG is a white crystal with a distinctive mildly sweet taste and aftertaste. TMG may be dissolved into juice, water or tea.
Several companies have mistakenly labeled betaine HCL as TMG. If found in capsules, open the capsule and taste the ingredients. If it is strongly acidic it is most likely betaine HCL or hydrochloric acid. Similarly, chewing a tablet should not burn your tongue but have a mild sweet taste.
TMG is not unknown to the medical establishment. Used since 1981 in the treatment of homocystinuria, it has recently been approved by the FDA to make the medical claim that it aids in the treatment of homocystinuria. Sold since the early 1980's or prior, TMG is actually a well understood supplement that has no reports of negative side-effects when used in the usual dosages.
In animals, TMG decreases VLDLs, increases muscle mass, decreases fat content. TMG is also known to increase bone density. These effects are poorly understood but well documented. TMG also helps regulate the methylation process, increasing SAM and reducing risk and potential damage from high homocysteine levels in bodily fluids and tissues.

  • Betaine /TMG (not to be confused with Betaine HCL) works along with Vitamin B6, folic acid and Vitamin B12 to augment the formation of SAMe, an amino acid in the brain. Amino acids are proteins.
  • It helps with the Methylation process which is necessary for life
  • TMG (Betaine Anhydrous) is a primary methyl donor with the following applications in human nutrition:
  • Anti-depression: By raising level of beneficial SAM (S-Adenosyl-Methionine). Dose range: 500-1,500 mg daily
  • Body building: In the animal husbandry field, TMG is used to decrease fat and increase meat yield. While human studies have just started, a 200 pound individual with 20% body fat can expect to lose as much as 5 pounds of fat and gain as much as 12 pounds of muscle. Dose range: 500-2,000 mg daily
  • Cardiac protection: Conversion of homocysteine to Methionine. Dose range: 500-1,000 mg daily
  • General Health Preventative: As part of a formula for maintaining good health or disease prevention. Dose range: 500-1,000 mg daily
  • Glutathione Elevation: In several different studies, TMG has been shown to increase hepatic Glutathione, the body's most important antioxidant. Dose range: 500-1,500 mg daily
  • Homocysteine Lowering: Specific for that purpose. The supplement of choice for lowering homocystenuria, Dose range: 500-1,000 mg daily. As used by clinicians and hospitals with patient monitoring -up to 3 grams daily
  • Liver Disorders: As a part of liver-healing and protection formulas. Increases SAM levels in the liver, enables the liver to metabolize fat and protect against many challenges such as alcohol induced cirrhosis. TMG will also decrease bilirubin, alkaline phosphotase, and several other liver enzymes related to a large variety of liver disorders. Significant liver benefits have been shown in 20 studies. Dose range: 500-1,500 mg. daily.
  • Longevity Formulations: As a part of a life extension formula. TMG has shown ability to protect interrogate of cellular DNA through methyl donation. Dose range: 500-1,000 mg daily.
  • Methyl Donor Formulations: Along with B12, Folic acid, and Choline. Dose range: 500-1,500 mg. daily.
  • Performance: Due to it's bi-polar nature, helps osmotic pressure in cells. For example it is used in salmon farming to protect fish against the problems of changing salt content. In humans, TMG maintains normal cellular electrolyte concentrations despite water and electrolyte losses during exercise. TMG also helps metabolize fats, which allows the body to burn fat rather than protein or muscle during exercise. The result is less cramping, increased endurance, and better utilization of fat stores, Dose range: 1,000-2,000 mg daily.
The natural form of TMG is called Betaine Anhydrous and is present naturallly in Molasses from Sugar Beets, Spinach and other greens; Wheat Berries, etc. Red beets are not considered a primary source and are much smaller, as the image shows. There is a form of Betaine which gets confused which is Betaine HCL (hydrochloride) which is not the same. Betaine Hydrochloride is Hydrochloric Acid, and is used in skincare, digestive issues, etc. Anhydrous means "without all water", which is what true TMG is. It is extremely hydroscopic and absorbs water from the air even during shipping if exposed. Shipping can sometimes cost more than the material when shipped without proper care.
There are a few purveyors online which say they sell "Organic" TMG. This is a falsehood. There is no such thing because there are not enough organic beets worldwide to produce it. It is ignorance or an out and out marketing ploy. Besides the Chinese, there are only 2 main producers, one in Europe and one in the US. No manufacturer has gone to the trouble to apply for Organic certification because they'd be rejected on the face due to growing practices. The majority of sugar beets (99+%) used for making molasses (where TMG comes from) are GMO, even if they are called "organic" which means nothing anymore in today's hyped up commodities world. However, most true certified "Organic" Beets sold as food will never make it into the sugar industry because there just isn't enough of them. The next falsehood going around online is the term "Pharmaceitical Grade" TMG. Again, FALSE. Yes, there is a type of TMG used in skincare, and medicine (Cystadane®) but it is NOT USP or NF Certified (this is what makes it "Pharmaceutical Grade"). Just because an ingredient is used in medical products doesn't necessarily mean it is "Pharmaceutical Grade". Ours is the highest possible grade available at 99.9% Pure.
Our TMG is either manufactured in Finland or from a US who certifies theirs at 99.9% pure.. We will not buy Chinese raw material knowlingly. It is poor quality and has a bitter taste and off color and is not up to our standards.
European & US made raw materials are always more expensive than cheap and frequently toxic Chinese raw materials. With the purchase of the European Finnish manufacturer recently, pricing has changed and fluctuates with the Euro. We never know from one batch to the next what the prices are going to be. Any pricing on our website may not be aup to date. Please Call to verify prices.
Anhydrous Betaine has had FDA Label claim clearance for many years. Not that FDA can be trusted these days but for those whom this is important, it IS FDA Approved for Human & Animal Nutrition as well as "drug" manufacturer since Betaine A. is sold under the Pharmaceutical Name "Cystadane" and is an RX sold for many conditions including heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, etc.
It is estimated by the Organic Watchdog group "GMO Project" that 100% of Sugar Beets are GMO. TMG is made from Molasses from Sugar Beet because it is not present in other plants in sufficient quantity to mass manufacture, that we know of (i.e.spinich, kale, etc.). Therefore, as far as we can determine, there is no such thing as "NON GMO" TMG. However, the testing done by both the European manuifacturer and the US Manufacturer, shows no BT toxin signature. This is the signature looked for to determine if Glyphosphate / RoundUpReady® has been used. How this is possible, we don't know but it is what we are told by the manufacturers. Since we don't have our own test equipment, we can only take their word. The benefit of TMG outweighs the risks in our opinion.
IMPORTANT BUYING TIPS: TMG is very hydroscopic--it absorbs water from the atmosphere and tends to split capsules from expansion which is why many companies tablet it. This characteristic also makes it very heavy and so shipping costs are rather high and many aren't willing to pay them since they can actually cost more than the raw material. Due to our warehouse volume and direct buying from a Danisco distributor, we can keep our raw material prices competitive.
When looking for TMG, if looking at tablets, remember there are tableting agents used, so the amoung of mg. or gram quoted may not be pure TMG but have fillers and tableting agents. WE DON'T RECOMMEND TABLETS. BULK CRYSTALLINE FORM IS THE IDEAL AND CAN BE STIRRED INTO FOODS OR WATER OR SPRINKLED ONTO FOODS LIKE CEREAL, SMOOTHIES,ETC.
USE RECOMMENDATIONS: Research shows that 3-5 grams per day is beneficial.. A Teaspoon is 4.5 grams or so, depending on the spoon, so a 1/2 teaspoon 2x per day is sufficient to assist in methylation and reduction of homocysteine, in addition to a high quality diet with lots of fresh greens and seeds.
NOTE: It is normal for it to have a slightly bitter secondary taste. We only sell ultrafine granulated grade, not the larger animal greed feed quality.
